According to my grandma, French-San Franciscans like here were often called "Keskedees".

It was not a nice nickname.

It originated from a phrase used by French immigrants who didn't speak English well, and kept asking the question "Ce qui est cela il a dit ?" (or similar), which translates roughly to "Huh? What'd you say?"

To Yankees, this sounded like they were saying 'keskedee'.
