Re: The Emporium on Market Street

I remember my sister being afraid to ride the down escalator from the 2nd floor. My mother and I were already riding down before we realized it. Mom yelled up to her to stay put and we would come right back, but she wandered off somewhere and we spent probably half an hour looking for her.

Another thing I recall from being a small child accompanying my mother downtown were the big sales held under the dome. This would have been in the early 1960s. My sister and I HATED those sales; it was always frenzy of shoppers gone wild. We have a memory of my mother being engaged in a tug-of-war with another woman who grabbed the same sweater at the same time. I don't remember who won.

The Emporium kept an archive, I remember seeing some things on display; I've often wondered what happened to it when the store was swallowed up and put out of business. Corporations aren't always known for their sensitivity regarding history.
