Probably in the Spring of 1943 Lafayette School started a Victory Garden. These gardens were part of the "War Effort" and all on the home front were encouraged to grow their vegetables. The school's garden was on a sandy, empty lot on the S/W corner of 37th & Anza just across the street from the school. Our 6th grade class spent about an hour a week (???) working (Hah! Hah!) in the garden, as did the other classes. I think some things actually grew - maybe because some of the teachers who knew about successful gardening helped it along.
