My five:

1. Flocking to Ocean Beach with other kids to watch a tsunami that never arrived. What a disappointment! Going to the beach to watch a tsunami? What?

2. Biking to Golden Gate Park on the morning of January 21, 1962 (I still remember that historic date) to look at the snow before it melted. I had never seen snow before!

3. Going to the toy shop on Geary Boulevard to buy sections of American Flyer model-train track when they were on sale for 10 cents each instead of the usual 30 cents.

4. Going with Dad on a Saturday to Lincoln Way during the era that the brick-lined streetcar tracks were being removed, to load up the car trunk with bricks which later became part of our back yard patio. Free bricks! To this day, those former streetcar-line bricks are still in the patio.

5. Listening to the parents say: “Why are you kids playing baseball in the street when there is a nice new playground two blocks away on 41st Avenue?”
