I have read many of these messages about how Playland got in the later years, About gang wars, unsafe rides, unsavory people etc.
While I am older than many of you, I have good memories of Playland. When I was a kid in the late 30's and 40's, I had good experience there, the fun house, the roller coaster, the bumper cars etc.
In the early 50's my fiancee, had leg surgery and had to walk a lot to heal her legs properly. She lived at 44th and Anza. Every night I would pick her up and we would drive down to Playland and walk. There were never any problems, the people there were great and it was very enjoyable, especially after a hard days work. There were a couple of places where you could play 26, a game with dice at a quarter a game. I usually won enough for my gas or a Bull Pup.
Its too bad those days are gone. The bright thing is we will celebrate our 52nd anniversary this July. We were married at Saint Gabrials Church.
