48th Ave. Radio Telegraphy Station Helped Win World War I

Sometimes history is completely forgotten because no one passes anything along. One of the first major wireless telegraphy stations in the entire nation was created on 48th Avenue between Noriega and Ortega Street. It was the Poulsen Wireless Corporation of Arizona founded in 1910 and later called the Federal Telegraph Company. And though it had Arizona in its name, it was created in here. It had radio towers that were 300 feet high and they had a 12-kilowatt and 30-kilowatt Poulsen generator. The technology was successfully tested by the Navy which soon took over the entire company because it proved to be of great military importance. The company then went on to play a vital roll in military communications between battleships and Washington during World War I.
