This reply is seventeen years after the original post, but I just wanted to say that as a person who grew up in Ingleside Terrace and now lives in Merced Heights, I loved reading this, Joy.

I know that neighborhoods change -- mostly for the worst according to most -- but I think that memories, like the persons moving to and from them, define a place.

History echoes, is what I'm trying to say and I'm so glad when I read one of those echoes of a place that I call home.
