By the time we reached the stage where we had to have book covers, the kids in my class at Commodore Sloat would beg which ever parent was the softest touch to take us to the Cal Book Co. store across from CCSF to get a half dozen book covers. The selection there was promoting colleges from all over the world plus unexpected organizations such as the U.S. Marine Corps. While I can still picture in my mind the red book cover for the Corps even today, the covers from schools around the world (Europe actually) was my first introduction to institutions that would be followed throughout a professional career. Of course, come the next calendar year those covers would be torn and the rest of the academic year saw us with book covers made from left over Safeway, Littleman, or DayLight Market brown bags.
