An undersea volcano erupted in spectacular fashion near the Pacific nation of Tonga on Saturday, sending large tsunami waves crashing across the shore and people in the island region rushing to higher ground.

Locally: Tidal gauges at Point Reyes & Monterey are now experiencing initial water perturbations from the arriving tsunami.

The tsunami will impact our coast and bays over the course of several hours, and the highest water levels may not arrive until hours after onset

NOAA expects tsunami waves of 1 - 3 feet, which may also coincide with high tide.
For low lying areas in the Bay, expect similar coastal flooding impacts that we observe during strong King Tide events.
