Metson Lake-South Lake stream

Recently I spoke with a gardener in Golden Gate Park who periodically turns on the water at Metson Lake enough to raise the water level to flow out of the "drain" at the west end. The water flows down a narrow, rock-lined channel before puddling-out at Metson Drive. With enough volume of water, it then flows under Metson Drive via a culvert before finally expiring just past the concrete bridge at 34th and MLK.

I told him that when I was a kid in the 60s the stream flowed all the way to South Lake, meandering and going under roads and trails.

Does anybody remember the stream and any of its history and was became of it besides neglect?
