Good post Norm. I was laid up with a bad head cold the first of this year and read Marilyn Chase's "The Barbary Plague: The Black Death in Victorian San Francisco". It was frustrating to me to read of the politics behind the On-then-Off again effort to understand, admit, and contain the existence of plague in San Francisco during the first decade of the 20th Century. It was the focused dedication of the medical figures on the scene who were seeing the threat for what it was. The denial and interference by those who halted effective quarantine and treatment actually prolonged the public threat.
