One last detail. I found a description of the station in the "Daily Alta California" for September 23, 1853 that includes this helpful tidbit:

"Upon the top of Point Lobos Messrs. Sweeny & Baugh have erected their look-out and telegraph house. It is 400 feet above the water, and on a pleasant day commands an extensive view seaward. "

The present-day elevation of the VA Hospital at Fort Miley is 350 feet, but old topographic maps of the hilltop before it was leveled show its summit was 400 feet.
