I'm a member of the sunset community garden, former APG student (2007), and also a geographer. I found historic aerial photos of the Sunset from 1938 to 1969 and I could not identify the garden in any of the photos. A.P. Giannini was built in the 1950s and S.I. was built at it's current location in 1969. Even in the 1969 aerial photos, I couldn't see any trace of the garden, but maybe it was very small. It was not there in any of the other aerial photos I found dated prior to 1969. I think the photos dispute the fact that it was a victory garden, unless it was located somewhere else before moving between APG and SI. The City had a community garden program in the early 70s and I believe that's when the garden was built. Would need to confirm with the long time garden members, but the aerial photos speak for themselves, in my opinion.
