I was sitting at my desk on the tenth floor of the Flood Building, corner of Powell and Market, when things started bouncing. I got out from under the swaying glass chandelier and headed for a table to duck under, when I realized that this venerable building had stood through the 1906 quake. At the end of the day I took my usual cable car ride to my apartment on Polk Street where I found no damage. I had moved there with my new wife three years earlier from my childhood home in the Parkside.
