I and the guys on my block used to make a pilgrimage from across town (Portola District) to the slot card tracks at Playland. I remember the various colored tracks and some very cool and fast slot cars. Does anyone remember Edna & Jerry's on 18th and Castro? Edna and Jerry, an older couple ran the place, with one large 1/24 scale track with a killer bank turn, one 1/32 scale track, and one HO scale track. Plus they sold hi-end Japanese motors (Miura) and parts. So much fun at both tracks.
