I was on the mayor's committee to get the Old Mint Museum reopened after it was closed in 1993 in response to the 1989 earthquake. When I moved away from SF 20 years ago, the matter was still pending, but the city decided to do nothing afterward.

I'm still in touch regularly with Donald Kagin, a coin dealer in Tiburon, who's spearheading the numismatic community's efforts to get a new museum established in the Old Mint building. You may recognize that name from the recent Saddle Ridge Hoard of gold coins found in the Sierra foothills that got so much press a couple months ago. He handled the coins and has been displaying them around the country.
