As a government employee for a number of years, I had offices in the Old Mint for two separate periods, once in the 1950s and then in the 1960s. For the latter assignment, as a director, I occupied the corner office — the corner of Fifth and Mission — on the top floor, with a black marble fireplace, no longer functioning. In the 1980s it came to be a museum, with the interior restored to its 19th century appearance, with some of the original Victorian furniture retrieved from Mint facilities in Philadelphia. Only then,as a visitor, did I realize that my office had been the grand venue of the 19th century mint director.
