CamphoPhenique - did I spell that right? - calamine lotion, iodine rarely, mecurochrome, mineral oil, castor oil - a few drops on top of the orange juice - Vicks Vapo-Rub are what come to mind now. And the wonderful treat Mom made when I was on the road to rcovery...buttered toast sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar swimming in warm milk.

I only heard about my mother-in-law's cure for colds - take a whole grapefruit, cut up in chunks rind and all, cover with water and boil the heck out of it. Strain the stuff and drink the slightly cooled juice. Then go to bed with a mustard plaster and have your neck wrapped in a piece of flannel. Wow! No cold germ could survive that. About that boiled grapefruit - I recall quinine was thought to be the beneficial ingredient - and have my doubts.
