Around our house, Bayer aspirin and Phillips Milk of Magnesia were the wonder drugs of choice for all internal ailments, with hydrogen peroxide for external problems. Most illnesses were responded to with a strict food regimen--nothing more than 7-Up sipped slowly for the first few hours. If that stayed down, then the next meal would be weak tea and dry whole wheat toast. If the patient was clearly on the mend by then, a soft-boiled egg might be added, and then a bowl of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup (Mom always kept at least half-a-dozen cans on hand) with a couple of soda crackers. Within 3 days, any illness could be cured, and the patient was typically 5 pounds lighter in weight.
