I guess I am among the "lucky" since I do remember getting ONE cup of ice cream (probably ice milk actually) on the day of my release from St Francis after my tonsillectomy when I was about 4 or 5. My guess is that a "clear liquid" diet was the rule of thumb after the operation and I remember hating the cups of broth, jello, and all the other tasteless "hospital food" they tried to get me to eat.
The one vivid memory I've retained all these years is the nurse telling me (when she brought my lunch) that if I didn't finish ALL of it, I would not get any ice cream and I WOULD NOT get to go home when my parents came to pick me up that day. Looking back on it now, that nurse would have made a great nun...haha
