When I was growing up, our next-door neighbor, Claire (a Jewish mother herself), always said, "If there are two chickens, and one is sick, a Jewish mother will kill the healthy one to make chicken soup for the sick one".

I also remember a nun telling me once that most mothers were very circumspect about what they wrote in notes when a child was absent: "I kept Johnny at home yesterday because of an upset stomach". No one ever seemed to have had anything more serious than that--Sister said that she suspected many mothers probably felt uncomfortable using the words "diarrhea" or "vomiting" in a letter to a nun.
