Yes, Herb Caen columns were a treasure trove of Caen-coined, only-in-San Francisco words. The only two I can recall at the moment are "Bezerkley" referring, of course, to Berkley, and Sackatamata, for Sacramento.

I was recently emailing a friend who lived for a short time in San Francisco in the 60s. I asked her where she lived and she said "the suburbs." I had to laugh - I then knew she didn't live in SF long enough to realize that one never referred to any area outside of Downtown as "the suburbs." Rather, we named a specific district ("I lived in the Mission") or simply indicated "The Avenues."
