Some years back I saw an illustration of Strauss' first GG Bridge design. It was strictly heavy-duty, an ungraceful design. Something like a double version of SF's 3rd St. drawbridge, the two halves facing each other. No wonder that it received a cool reception.

Still and all, it must be said that all of those accomplished, brilliant engineering types, AND those brave workers, created a beautiful, legendary structure.
