I went to Lowell, but I have to admit, those Mercy girls riding on the 28 bus back in the '70s caught my eye! (It was the uniforms and the fact that catholic school girls were considered "off-limits" to us public school guys).

When my daughter (who was also raised in the City) reached school age, my wife and I opted to send her to non-denominational private school - Lycee Francais for elementary and middle school and Drew for high school. That's because at the time, getting into a good public school was such a hassle and you had little control over where your kid was sent.

I find that amongst us "natives" (and I use that term loosely) who grew up here in the '40s, '50s, and '60s, it was either catholic school or public school. That was it. Simple. There didn't seem to be the plethora of other types of private schools that there are today. Maybe they were around, but I just wasn't aware of them when I was growing up.
