Angus is a decade late and some “spare change, man?” short. The denizens of Northbeach, attired in their evening dress of sun glasses and Bermuda shorts , were allegedly dubbed “beatnicks” by Herb Caen.
I say “allegedly” since the origin stems from Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” which was, like “Catcher in the Rye,” mandatory reading for all male baby boomers. Herb may have copped the “nick” from Nikita and his space program.
Kerouac refers to the “beats” as short for beatification and, while his rhythmic ramblings take on the incessant pounding of bongos, the term has little to do with drums and more with heart and spirit.
So if you happen to see Angus, please pass this on and also let him know weed ceased to be cool once it became legal.
Cheers,
jb
