Thanks for all the wonderful replies to my post. It is very interesting. I don't exactly when my house was built but it is fascinating to hear about the lengths people went to enjoy good times. I wonder what kind of wine the previous owners made in my basement. A friend suggested I use a metal detector around the yard and see what I find. You just never know. There's a wealth of history underneath us.
