I don't know of any books about bootleggers in SF, but making wine at home was common in Italian families. My mother's father and his brothers made their own, and it was nasty --- good only for getting drunk. He drove liquor cars for a brief time during Prohibition, but I don't believe he had any greater involvement than that.
