Great article!!! It really brought back memories.

Growing up on 18th Ave near Lincoln Way, I remember the 19th & Lincoln intersection well. As kids, we used to frequent the vending machines at the Shell and Flying A gas stations there. I remember the "gas wars" they used to have between the competing stations and attendants at the Flying A station, who were particularly grouchy. At one point, evidently sick and tired of giving directions to motorists, they put up a big crude, hand-painted sign with a the word "ZOO" accompanied by an arrow that pointed south and the word "BEACH" with an arrow that pointed west. I also recall when "Arthur's at the Park" was built. Somehow, I knew that place would never make it.

Regards,

REX
