Bless you Tim!! Now I don't feel so dumb. Turns out, my SF map (CA AAA edition) doesn't even label the area as Cole Valley. (And apologies for calling it Coe Valley - typo on my part.)

If nothing else, this thread is providing even more interesting history about the origin of "outside" lands. Thank you, Angus, for your input.
