I lived in SF from 1963 to 1972 and remember The Surf Theater so fondly. Did not know anybody at first, so I would take the N Judah trolley to 46th and see 2 foreign films for a dollar. The best and cheapest film education I ever got. I viewed Bergman,Fitz Lang, Bertolucci, Carlo Ponti,Eisenstein,Fellini,Visconti,Truffaut,Cocteau,De Sica,Antonioni,Renais,Malle,Kurosawa,Polanski and other films.
Seeing these films gave me such a better view of the world than I had ever been exposed to before.
I do not think I could of survived without the Surf Theater in my early days in San Francisco.
