I grew up a few blocks away from that firehouse on 18th Avenue--in fact, my parents almost bought the next-door house just north of it back in 1948, but Dad was concerned about getting a good night's sleep, so they kept looking. My question is why every fire house always had a "driver" to take the ranking officer to the scene of a fire in a car? Police officers always seemed to drive themselves, so why did the fire department always have a driver on call?
