Gosh, I'm beginning to wonder if the SF accent is the result of a mix of:
1. Easterners heading west to participate in the Gold Rush,
2. Plus the large Italian and Irish immigrant population that also headed westward.
With all that eclectic mingling of different "types," perhaps certain intonations and pronunnciations were adopted - like maybe an Italian fellow hearing an expatriate New Yorker say "warsh" instead of "wash," and unconsciously mimicking it...

Think I'm gonna have to put my Research Hat on...
