I met Pat's dad once and everything he says about him rings true.

My father wanted to join the Scouts when he was a kid during the late teens. It was a particularly low period in Irish-Anglo relations and my grandmother nixed the idea of her boy wearing the uniform of a group founded by an Englishman.

It sounds strange today but not so much then. At that time the English in Ireland behaved like brutes.
