My first job was in a small pharmacy in Noe Valley. It was the early 1960s and I was 14. George, the owner-pharmacist had a heart of gold, often discounted or entirely wrote off bills so the elderly or disadvantaged could still get their medicine. At any given time, there would be five or ten kids sitting on the floor of the store reading the latest comic books. Kids could run a delivery for George, and earned a dime for their effort. I dearly miss the small, owner-operated grocery stores, butcher shops, toy stores, variety stores and drug stores.
