Great memory.
For me it was a stocky German named John who operated a small hole-in-the-wall grocery store two doors from my home. We got our daily supplies (bread, milk, etc) from him morning, noon or night. What made him special to us kids was the large supply of "penny" candy he always kept in stock. He had a habit of giving any kid who was sent by parents to purchase something a free piece of their favorite candy.
