When I was in high school, my girlfriends and I would say we were getting together to study, and instead go down to the Mel's on Van Ness. It was always crammed with kids, visiting from car to car and playing their radios full blast.
Needless to say, when "American Graffiti" appeared years later, I could honestly claim, "been there, done that." (I was living in Canada at the time the movie came out. Friends and neighbors who saw the film were quite impressed that I had actually hung out at at the Real Mel's...thus, I had my 15 Minutes of Fame in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.)
