The book I most often recommend to folks wanting to learn something about local history is SAN FRANCISCO, originally published by the Federal Writers' Project of the WPA. It was part of the American Guide Series which were similar books on certain American cities and, I assume, all the states. It was updated in the '70s by Gladys Hansen. The book is both history and tour guide.
