This is a great topic! Everyone has their own favorite book (or books) about San Francisco. A book that I found at Green Apple is called "This Is San Francisco", written by Robert O'Brien. He used to write a column in the paper called "Riptide" and those columns formed the basis for the book. The book was written in the 1940s/early 1950s. The book takes famous streets around San Francisco and provides historical narratives surrounding them. Pretty enjoyable read.
