I have lived next to Lake Merced for the last thirty one years and I have seen coyotes, snakes, skunks, possums, raccoons, lizards, squirrels, and lots of birds. Back in the 70's, there used to be the beautiful sounds of owls in the woods but they are gone now. I have only seen quail and bunnies at nearby Fort Funston. I've never seen a fox in all this time although others have.
What has really surprised me is how large racoons, possums and skunks can get. These are not little woodland critters - they are big!
Back in 1998, a Golden Eagle visited my apartment balcony several times. Unfortunately, one of these times was during a dinner party. When one of my dinner guests looked over and saw the bird - he just freaked out and started screaming! Golden Eagles are HUGE and quite a shock if you haven't seen one up close before. We still make jokes about that evening.
