The classroom windows at Our Lady of Mercy School in Westlake faced east towards San Bruno Mountain, on the opposite side of which lay the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.
Latter would have been a primate target in the event the Cold War went hot.
I remember during one of the early 'duck 'n' cover' drills that the nuns instructed us not to look out the windows if we saw a brilliant flash because our eyes would melt.
Reassuring advice for a nine-year-old.
