Confederate general statues were generally erected to glorify the failed confederacy. The George Washington murals, by contrast, were painted to expose -- not extol -- the reality of our first president's slave holdings and brutality towards Native Americans.

If we start painting out educational images that offend our sensibilities, I have a long litany of things that offend me personally -- but that we need to see to be reminded of the past.
