I was six years old at the time and in the first grade at St. Brendan's elementary school. As the students assembled in the school yard that morning at about 8:20 a.m., I felt a slight shake of the ground and thought to myself--wouldn't it be cool (maybe I said "neat" at the time) if I had a device that would allow me to cause the ground to shake at my command? This was several hours before the major quake hit at around 11:30 a.m. that morning. Following the major quake, we were sent home from school. This was the first earthquake I experienced as a youth growing up in the City during the 1950's and 60's.
