I believe the forerunner to the gum/baseball cards were WAR Gum cards of 1938 to '41. They depicted scenes of Japaneese Soldiers chopping-up and shooting the Chineese, and other gastly acts. (wouldn't be socially acceptable these days). Paid for one with my new Jefferson nickel (Buffalo nickel just phased out), and got change, so they were about 2cents each. Checking on google, the more than 200 card series brings very high prices.
