Just saw the following message posted on a Facebook page entitled SAVE THE EL REY:

Moments ago, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved amending the Planning Code to designate the former El Rey Theater a city landmark!

This is a major step in preserving our neighborhood’s beautiful Art Deco movie palace for generations to come.

The Art Deco Society, Ocean Avenue Association, San Francisco Architectural Heritage, Ingleside Terraces Homes Association, VerPlanck Historic Preservation Consulting, and all of you have been vital to realizing this 18-month project. We owe thanks to District 7 Supervisor Norman Yee, District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin and District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safai for sponsoring the ordinance.

A very special thanks to Therese Poletti, Dan Weaver, Luis Licea, Neil Ballard, Chris VerPlanck, Tim Frye, Shannon Ferguson, Joquin Torres, Amy Cohen, and Urbano Ezquerro.

The OMI Business Association will be holding a Party for the OMI’s Historic Landmarks at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, at the Ocean Ale House. Please save the date. Details to follow.

The Western Neighborhoods Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
