The posting's on Sutro's stables prompted me to write about the Ocean Beach Riding Academy, which was right across the street from Roberts at the Beach on 48th. It was between Riviera and Santiago Streets and encompassed a full 1/2 block. I lived there as a kid during the war and my mom and dad worked for the owner, Mrs. Rogers. Thousands of soldiers, sailors and marines celebrated and got drunk there during the war and we could see the convoys leaving the Gate under cover of blimps. Blackie, The Horse That Swam the Golden Gate was stabled there and was owned by Shorty Roberts.
