When I was going to the San Francisco Art Institute in the Sixties I had an art studio around the corner from the Surf Theater. I would stumble over after an all day painting session smelling like turpentine and Mel would let me in but I had to sit in the corner in the back as to not bother anyone. I was so impressed by the foreign films Mel would show I switched to the San Francisco State Film department to study film-making. A Spanish film called “Lovers of Teruel” inspired me to do my film called “Woman in the Sutro Baths”. Mel Novikoff donated some black and white film footage seen in the beginning of the film. A great man with a great vision for film.
