What was it like inside home during '89 quake?

Could outside lands people tell their experience inside their home during the 1989 earthquake.

What I would like very much to know is how did the homes in the outside lands endure the 1989 earthquake from inside the home. Did bookshelves fall over, did antiques fall off the table, did foundations suffer cracks or walls crack or crumble, did doors become difficult to open etc., and what was the rocking and shaking like inside the home.

When the earthquake hit did anyone notice if the earth moved from east to west or from north to south. I suppose no way is good but some directions are probably worse than others depending on the position of your home.

Basically, I would be interested in anyone's experience inside a home in the outside lands during the 1989 earthquake.
