When my Dad died in Oct 1975 it was his wish to be cremated so we utilized the services of The Neptune Society including the spreading of his ashes at sea. Other than the funerals of my grandparents which I was way too young to remember (1 and 3 years old) my only recollection was the flag that adorned my grandfather's casket was presented to my Mom (he was a WWI veteran) and we would display that flag (48 stars) hanging from our balcony each Memorial Day and 4th of July for many years and do our best to refold it in military style afterwards.

As jb points out and Jo Anne comfirms, laughter and sense of humor plays an important part in allowing us to move on with our lives as we go through our own grieving process at the loss of a loved one. I certainly prefer that the people I spent much of my life with joking, laughing, having fun with, etc. would remember me in such a fun way with festive partying featuring good booze, food (old recipes if possible), jokes, and music. jb's beach party is a nice touch, but if I have any say in my own "wake", I would pick the top of the big grass hill at Sunset Reservoir overlooking "Doelger City" and watching the sun disappear into the ocean...something I've done thousands of times.

Salute,

W.M.
