I remember the events well and many of those whose previous attempts had failed.
At the time, "Ike" Papke (Sacramento) was considered the most likely to succeed but after several unsuccessful attempts he gave up. Myra Thompson (San Francisco, Lincoln HS) was the most successful in that she was pulled from the waters just outside the bay near Kelly's.
The critical difference in the early success and failures was most likely water temperature. 1967 there was an El Nino, and the temperatures reached an unheard of 62 degrees.
