Looking at a map of San Francisco, it is clear why the real estate industry wanted those cemeteries OUT from the turn of the century on--they blocked the westward expansion of the residential districts. One of the biggest opponents to the removal was the Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco who did not want to see any dis-internments at all. Then the Jesuits--always an independent order of priests within the Catholic Church--built the new St. Ignatius Church and College at Fulton and Parker after their losses at Hayes & Van Ness in 1906. Once it became clear that the college, renamed the University of San Francisco in 1930, needed to expanded into the land occupied by the Odd Fellows' Cemetery, the SF Archbishop suddenly dropped his opposition to the grave removals.
